Hello Zoomies!
Last Sunday the 21st we met with the family adopting our first car, and it went swimmingly.
NOTE: To assure the family's privacy I'll be leaving out certain specifics.
The lucky kiddo receiving Project Zoom Zoom's first car ever unfortunately had a stroke at birth that caused his right side to be unable to function, however he can still operate his left arm and leg. But one working leg doesn't cut it as far as walking goes, so he's been left on the sidelines while his brother plays outside. Not anymore!
While he threw a bit of a tantrum when we tried to take his measurements, he mostly seemed excited about getting his car, and both he and the family were in love with one in particular: The John Deere Gator. More ATV than car, this most-terrains vehicle will have him flying across the yard at a stunning 4mph.
The modifications we'll be making to this vehicle are as follows:
- Moving the "gas" pedal to the left side so he can press it with his working left foot
- Adding a seat-belt for additional support and safety
- Creating a remote kill-switch for the parents to operate in case of emergency
The first two should be easy as 𝝅 , but the remote kill switch will be quite a challenge.
Our only real solace is that it only has to function to shut down the vehicle, but the Gator does not come with any kind of built in remote control, which means we'll be working from scratch. This part will not be easy. Our best plan is to salvage a different remote control so the final product can look clean and ease the work we have to do, but establishing a remote connection out of nothing isn't something either of us have much experience with. It's going to take some help and some trial-and-error to get through this.
Luckily, that's in the future. For now, the meeting was a huge success that allowed us to learn about the family and what they want out of the car.
With the information we collected, we can go into designing the car and start buying parts so we can get to work in time to have it done by Christmas. At our current efficiency, we should be able to start on that in early November, so we're ahead of schedule for now.
In other news, y'all really came through. So far $265 have been raised for our cause, cutting the price to the family down to $90. In fact, by the time this project is done, we will probably have raised all the money we need to pay for it independently. Because they already gave us the money, we'd love to use some extra funds to fill our car with gifts (including some for his brother so he doesn't get jealous), and some of course to fund our next car and the future of Project Zoom Zoom.
If you'd like to help us out, don't forget to visit our GoFundMe page.
Thanks for all your support and for spreading the word about our project.
Check back for more updates, I'll see you soon!
